How your puppy can live longer.

Fainting in a 7-week-old Maltese was due to hypoglcaemia

"The Maltese has parvovirus," says the new pet shop owner

Mini-maltese 8 weeks old with no tear staining for sale

"Please come and treat the Maltese," the pet new shop owner phoned. "It has fainted. Based on my experience of a previous case of a puppy having froth in its mouth, this Maltese has a parvoviral infection."

He had a client who wanted to buy a Maltese. Since the Australian Dollar had shot up by 30% in January 2004, he could not buy Australia-bred puppies and make a profit.  He bought one 7-week-old mini-Maltese from a local breeder at 9 a.m in the morning.

This breeder had his puppies vaccinated by me. I knew he had no parvoviral infection in his kennels. He kept his vaccinations up-to-date and very few of his puppies died.

One of the few Singapore breeders who would  vaccinate his puppies against the coronaviral infections.

The coronaviral vaccines cost five dollars more and should be used by breeders and pet shops but for economic reasons and lack of education, the breeders do not give the puppies the coronaviral vaccinations.  All breeders vaccinate their puppies against the deadly parvoviral infections though.

The mini-Maltese had a voracious appetite before handing over to the pet shop owner.

Now, at 9 p.m, the Maltese had fainted.  Was the puppy going to die soon?  It was an emergency but it was not a killer disease.

The puppy was given milk by the pet shop owner when I advised that he gave just the dog feed used by the breeder.  His kennel area was colder as he had few puppies.  The Maltese was not used to this new environment, separated from the noisy breeder's kennel.

I asked the pet shop owner to give the puppy honey or glucose immediately. He rushed out to buy some. To stick to the recommended diet and hand feed the puppy quickly.  He should call me one hour later. I did not hear from him.

Puppies less than 12 weeks old sometimes do not eat when separated from the other puppies.

The smells of the new pet shop, the cold air conditioning, the change of feed or its formula and the lack of supervision by the pet shop owner would contribute to a fainting puppy 12 hours after purchase.

If not treated promptly, it will die of hypoglcaemia (low glucose level in the blood).

First-time owners and new pet shop owners of less than 10-week-old puppies need to ensure that the puppies eat sufficient amounts at the new place to avoid the fainting puppy problem.
