How your puppy can live longer.

Mum has a large swelling. Can the Jack Russell puppies be born naturally?

"Doc, Doc, you have clamped the puppy's feet!", the breeder's assistant shouted.  The first puppy had been delivered by Caesarean and while I was clamping the umbilical cord before cutting it off, the second puppy burst out of the abdomen.

The first puppy was wriggling and its toes swayed towards the artery forceps as I clamped. My attention was distracted by the second pup exploding from the over-distended abdomen and a moving Jack Russell mother under the minimal general anaesthetic.

I quickly released the clamp. The next 3 puppies were all ripe to be born.  The mother was contracting as the anaesthetic was kept to the bare minimum to avoid any death risk. She moved her head sideways. "Hold the muzzle. Increase the dose to 5%," I said. "For twenty seconds only."

Jack Russells seldom need Caesarean sections. This was an unusual case. Her vulva was overshadowed by a huge soft tissue swelling. Her last right breast was very swollen too. Fluid had accumulated inside the tissues.

"What is it? What is the cause?" the breeder asked. "Does the bitch need a Caesarean delivery?  Can I wait till she has problems of giving birth?"

It was hard to give birth naturally as the swelling would have obstructed the birth canal.

"One or more puppies have obstructed the blood flow partially," I said. "The pressure on the veins have caused them to leak out the 'plasma' and this fluid has gone into the tissues, swelling the tissues. She will be all right after the puppies are removed."

I doubt the breeder knows what I am talking about. "Do you mean the Jack Russell mum has the same situation as a pregnant woman having swollen feet in late pregnancy?"

"Yes," I said. It is easier to relate something rarely seen in pregnant bitches to pregnant human beings.  Why didn't I think of that?

With the breeder's help, the Caesarean operation was completed in less than 30 minutes.

In this case, 5 out of the 6 puppies cried just as they were taken out and there was nothing much to do. Still the breeder held the pup's head in both hands and swung it up and down.  Very near the floor level.  "Do not do the swinging so close to the floor," I advised. "You may hit the puppy onto the floor."

"You are much faster now," the breeder said. He had no Caesarean sections for almost a year and had not seen me operating.  "Practice makes perfect," I said. "That's why I asked you to be prepare to handle and revive 6 pups within 5 minutes as I take them out."

"Any drug for the swelling?" the breeder asked.  "There is a drug, but the bitch is nursing and the less drugs the better for her and the puppies. The swelling will subside naturally."

The breeder's partner phoned. Everything was all right.

A newborn black Schnauzer accepted by the Chihuahua mumMarch 8 2004 was raining the whole day and I preferred not to venture out for extension visits to the breeders.  Torrential rain and flash floods prevailed due to high tides at 3 pm.

Since I was checking the Jack Russell mum with a large swelling above the vulva at the kennel, I might as well check the  Chihuahua puppies delivered by Caesarean 3 days ago.

The Chihuahua mother was already so small and nursing 4 hungry pups. An newborn Schnauzer was given to her as the mother had no milk.

5 pups would drain her of calcium and other nutrients and she may have milk fever in the next week.

However, the breeder has supplemented with tube feeding of goat's milk. Still, he has to be careful.

Conclusion:

Two expats were scheduled for house hunting today.  One was interested in the East Coast and the other was arriving from Bangkok but his flight was delayed. Only the Pebble Bay and The Waterside condos were viewed today as the 2nd expat did not arrive in Singapore on time to see the above units which would be re-scheduled for Sunday.

Pebble Bay was rated top in quality of interiors and resort ambience by the Indian American but he "lost" his car in the massive underground car park.

The Waterside unit provided the privacy he liked as windows do not face other apartments, and had a large dining area as well as spacious ensuite bedrooms.  The grey kitchen cabinets were not, of course, comparable to those of upscale Pebble Bay but the condo was value for money.

The Costa Rhu 3-bedroom condos were considered too packed and had no privacy as pool facing units look into opposite apartments.  He did not see the  water front units. In any case, the dining areas are much smaller than those in The Waterside.

For a rent budget of $5,000, it is practically not possible to rent a big unit at Pebble Bay, but it is realistic to get one at The Waterside.
