 Can a pre-teen child be street wise?


"You don't need to give me the photocopy of the Singtel new phone application form," said the executive at Singapore Telecom.  Efficiently, she keyed in the details of the expatriate's particulars in the official Singtel New Phone Application Form and gave Daniel a phone number expeditiously.
  
14-year old Darren was given the task to apply for 2 phone lines for an expatriate.   He came back with one phone number.

His letting realtor dad did not tell him what to do and where to go as this should be a "close your eyes easy job".

He was given the relevant documents and all he had to do was to get two new phone numbers.

He came back with one phone number.

"The form just said one line was wanted," the young Darren said.

He was correct but there were 2 application forms.  The photocopied form was for another phone line.

The expatriate wanted to apply for a company phone line and since Dad gave him one form, he had photocopied the original form filled up his company particulars when Dad met him at The Marriott Singapore.

Life is always full of the unexpected. Darren should have read the forms and compare them.

He could have phoned Dad that there was only "one" application form but he did not.

The duty of care is important in any person to accomplish a task. Life can be full of unexpected challenges or external influences.

Many people don't read the documents properly and jump to the wrong conclusions fast or contact the wrong people. 

Many local pilots of small planes are known to switch on the automated mode when the plane has lifted off.  They get up from their seat and they relax. If the automated programs malfunction, can they respond fast enough to prevent the plane from crashing?

Other people just depend on the advices of the service providers as in this Singtel case.  

Most times, nothing happens.

However, one needs to be alert. In this case, 2 phone numbers were applied for.   There was one original Singtel form and one photo-copied form. 

Singtel does not need a photocopy.  Could the photocopied form be an application form too?

Darren was told to get 2 phone numbers. He had got one. Was there a problem here?

Would a 14-year old be smart enough to deduce that this was the second form? Do 14-year olds think through a real life problem?  

It is difficult to teach pre-teens thinking and problem solving skills although they are given such paper exercises in schools.

How do we teach our pre teens to be street wise when they are not street fighters? 

How do they know about hunger when they have never been really hungry?  They are apt to   complain about what type of food they want to eat rather than to be thankful that they have food on the table every time they want to eat? 

How do we teach our children to be excellent in their academic studies and get a good degree when they have never been hungry for success?  They assume they will have the good life when they grow up.  

How do we prepare them for the  the real world where there are many con men when they are not living in slums?  When they spend their spare time to fight against the bad guys in the virtual world of computers?

Read widely and all sorts of magazines and newspapers.  That will be one excellent method of getting to know the real world since you are fortunate enough not to be mired in the quicksand of living from hand to mouth.  

Communicate with as many people from all walk of life and you will get wiser. Learn how to greet acquaintances with "Good morning".

Should the pre-teen learn by making mistakes of failing their examinations, getting kicked to schools with "slower" learning programs, to become street wise?  There is no one answer to this question. Nurturing a child to be street wise is a heavy   responsibility for parents. It must be tougher on single parents.
