TOP 10 MISTAKES OF SINGAPOREANS
1 mistake is mentioned in this case study
(Mistake no. 1).

Case Study No. 1
http://www.sinpets.com/stories/050303Toilet_training_mistakes.htm
1.  Assuming the puppy recognises the newspaper as the toilet location.
2.  Give the puppy free access to the whole apartment.
3.  No time to train the puppy properly.  The owner travels frequently.

Case Study No. 2
4.  Give in to the new puppy's whining on the first night.

Case Study No. 3
1.  Assuming the puppy recognises the newspaper as the toilet location.
2.  Home-alone puppy bored with chew toys.  Teething makes the puppy want to chew play pens and bowls.  A chew toy with treats as rewards may stimulate the puppy to chew it in preference to house furniture.

Crate (cage) as home for small breeds, apartments, Singapore

"The puppy will not pee on the newspapers, but we saw the puppy peeing on the newspapers in the pet shop. It chews everything in the apartment !"

Solutions for the busy owners

1. The pet shop puppy pees on the newspaper indirectly via the wire flooring. When it goes to a new home, the newspaper is in direct contact with the puppy's feet and it may not be able to associate urination with the newspapers as that would be the first time it had contact with the newspaper.

2. Use urine training solutions sold by the pet shop. Spray on the newspapers.

3. Soak a piece of newspapers in the puppy's urine and use it to train the puppy.

4.  Go to the pet shop to buy a pee tray with the wire flooring on top of the tray. The puppy may or may not go up to the pee tray to urinate and poo.  It depends on the intelligence and maturity of the puppy.  Essentially, the appliance is the bottom part of the collapsible cage seen in the picture above and is sold separately in some pet shops.

The puppy's first toys

Toys kept in the cage all day may not interest the puppy. When you go to work, give the puppy certain toys which interest the puppy as they contain food inside. One example is Kong's toys.

A large variety of toys in Singapore's pet shops and supermarkets.  Toys can be used to exercise the puppy mentally and physically depending on the type or as a reward for good behaviour.

1. Chew bone - nylon or plastic. Keep teeth and gum healthy by chewing. All puppies need to chew as they are teething.

2. Dog Pull toy. A tug-of-war toy. Will encourage aggressive behaviour. Use only if the puppy is willing to release it when you command it to do so.

3. Squeaky toy. Squeaks when chewed appealing to the puppy's hunting instincts.

4. Chew toy which is made of rubber and bounces when it is thrown stimulating the puppy to give chase.

Most Singaporeans put the toys in the cage or play pen/crate all day.  Toys can be used as a reward.  To use it as a reward, limit access to special times only and put them away.

SELECTION OF A PURE BREED
Health before external beauty. Not usually possible to choose a puppy from healthy well-bred stock and has a good temperament. Need to spend time.  Choose a reputable breeder or pet shop you know.

If you look for a bargain puppy, expect higher veterinary expenses and heart aches if your puppy does not grow up into a healthy dog.

Which breed suits your life style, male or female? High energy or sleeps all day breed? Adult or puppy? Many select the puppy for its appearance and temperament.

Show Dog
Dog showing is getting popular in Singapore.  Conformation showing, obedience trials, instinct tests, agility trials, tracking and others. Let Seller know you want a championship dog if you want to be a potential exhibitor.

Pet Dog
Active, sturdy puppy, bright eyes, clean  skin condition.  Friendly if possible. Not hyperacitve or sleepy.

Sources
The top quality dogs - go to  dog shows, trials or tests. Breeders usually there.
Dog Handlers, groomers and veterinarians who do business with breeders are additional sources of referrals.

Dog clubs.  Some clubs have a code of ethics which the breeders must adhere to in order to be recommended.

Ads in canine magazines and newspapers are usually from secure, well established kennels.  However, you need to check yourself.

New breeder. No long waiting lists.

Costs. Top quality for dog shows. Pet quality will do.

Visit Seller/breeder. Clean premises. Happy healthy dogs greet visitors at the door.  Sire and dam. If no sire, see photos.

Ask breeder. OFA1 certified for good hips and CERF1 certified for normal eyes? hypothyroidism, deafness and epilepsy in breeding stock?

If possible, examine for entropion, earsets, incorrect bites and missing teeth. Mismarks and improper coats.

Temperament tests.   From 7 weeks old. To determine which pups are over-aggressive or shy. Pups to be tested spearately by you in new surroundings. Bold, shy or curious.

1. Social tests.
Pup's reaction to a stranger/strange place. Hides in a corner, Comes out immediately or take some time to explore.

Call the puppy in a friendly manner, clapping or whistling.  Walks away and call the puppy.

2. Dominance tests.
Roll the pup on his back and hold him in place for 30 seconds.

Picks up pup with hands under the belly. Hold up for 30 seconds.

The aggressive bold pup reacts immediately, sometimes barking or biting.  The other extreme - shrinks and hides.
The ideal one will be friendly, hesitant but is cooperative in most tests.  Alert, show curioisity, run after the toy and return it to the tester.

3. Obedience/alertness tests.
Drag an object in front of the puppy. Does he show curiosity and follow?

PUPPY SURVIVAL SECRETS - ACCUMULATION OF VIRUSES AND OTHER GERMS IN A POORLY VENTILATED PET SHOP.A room with good ventilation smells nice, without the need to use chemicals or extractor fans.

Pet shops need a strong effective ventilation to dispel all germs, especially the kennel cough viruses and the parvoviruses which are still common in all pet shops.

The ceiling or partition extractor fans are ineffective. The strong stench of puppy's urine and stools can be smelt by the new puppy buyer.  The pet shop operators are so used to the stench that they seldom are aware of this smell which drives away prospective customers.

As all pet shops are air-conditioned, it is hard to get good ventilation as the puppies are kept in an enclosed central area or closed up back room.

A free 1.2 metre passage way between the front and back of the pet shop (in the picture, it is a veterinary surgery of 60 sq metres), permits breezes to flow through freely and keeps the premises fresh.

Extractor fans on the ceiling helps but the most effective way to get good ventilation is the breezes of open passageway.  Spraying the shop with anti-smell fragrance can be expensive and seldom works in the long term.

The dual-nozzle water bottle permits the puppy to drink water when it is outside the play pen. tpvets_logo.jpg (2726 bytes)A non-rustry pee-tray to contain puppy's urine and stools so that the floor tiles will not be stained.  It prevents the fences collapsing on the energetic puppy.
Stainless steel housing for puppies - costing around $500 Crate training of a puppy. asiahomes.com
tpvets_logo.jpg (2726 bytes)A stainless steel cage costs six times more than the play pen. It has a pee tray and comfortable flooring with small round holes. tpvets_logo.jpg (2726 bytes)Crate training. Confine in crate for 1-2 hours. Put in play-pen to pass urine/stools. Confine to crate again. In this picture, the carrier is the crate.  The crate is just small enough for the puppy so that it keeps it clean.
