Excerpts from The Glamorous Vets, Singapore

You got  tenant, dog owner?

"He keeps scratching his ears. He was treated by vets but he was still at his ears day and night.   I don't have time to bring him to the vets and I used lots of ear drops and other medication", said the busy Owner.  Many Singapore pet owners are busy working and have little time to go for regular veterinary check up for their pets.

"Boy", a Silkie Cross was muzzled when he visited the vets.  He had bitten all vets in Singapore.  His lady owner had to send flowers to a neighbour who had patted him and was bitten.  Guests could not leave the Owner's apartment as long as he was around as he was the guardian.

Therefore he was given a muzzle when he was brought to see Dr Foo.

Silkie cross dog tranquilised for ear irrigation

Both ears were full of matter hair and yellow discharge.  Boy was given a tranquiliser while the Owner held him. The muzzle was taken off since he might vomit after xylazine tranquiliser.

Boy was  taken out to wait for the tranquiliser to take effect. This usually occurs after 5 minutes.

But there was Dr Foo's leg and Boy snapped at the ankle to claim his umpteen veterinarian victim.

Which veterinarian would anticipate such an attack when the dog was on the way out of the clinic. Most dogs would be too happy to get out.  This one must take revenge!
Readers, you would give me an Incredulous look. But this was true. Now, Dr Foo had to seek treatment for a human doctor.

Black skin around vertical ear canal, pus and blood - one year suffering.
Chronic otitis externa.
Black pigmentation at the entrance to the ear canal indicated an irritation and scratching of the ears for a very long time, in this case, for over 12 months.

After 15 minutes of waiting, there was no vomiting. Boy was still alert as you could see from the image on the left.  His eyes were wide open  A loose muzzle was put over his nose, just in case.  The right ear was more severely affected. Both ears were flushed with clean water and much harden purulent clumps and blood were flushed out.   Antibiotics were given for 20 days and a review would be necessary.  It might take more ear irrigation to resolve the problem.

This would be the Silkie no veterinarian would want for a patient.  Ear troubles are uncommon in Silkies as their ears are erect.  Some owners use olive oil and/or ear powder to resolve the problem but this may not help as the ear canal of the dog is L-shaped.  It is made up of a vertical canal (the opening of which you would see from the outside) and then the canal turns at right angle to be a horizontal canal.   Therefore, powder and oil just accumulate in the horizontal canal and irritate the ear drum at the other end.  Do seek prompt veterinary treatment and follow up.
