The King Charles Spaniel shook his head vigorously  As if it was well trained, the 2-year-old King Charles Spaniel shook his head vigorously from side to side for five times when examined by the veterinarian. This was the complaint of his owner. Most dogs don't display their abnormal behaviour when presented at the veterinarian.  I palpated the right ear canal which is just below the opening of the ear. The dog did not mind but when I did the same on the left ear, he shrieked. He became wary of me. He would not permit examination of the ear when I put in a cotton bud to check out the discharge of the ear canals. There was a faint rancid smell at the end of the cotton bud taken from the left ear canal. The smell of rancid oil mixed with pus. No other signs.  Would this cause his frequent head shaking?I tranquilised the spaniel. 15 minutes later, I irrigated the ear canal with water in a mild antiseptic solution. He remembered me and gave me a quick nip on my fingers. Not a viscious bite but a warning from a knocked down dog. A muzzle was applied. A small lump of dark brown cells was flushed out.  |
