The Pekinese eats the diamond ring

Pekinese. 24 hours after swallowing a diamond ring

Ms Juliana Angellinio was surrounded by diamonds all her life as her father was in this business. She operated a jewellry shop in a four-star hotel in Singapore.

She always bring her black and white Pekinese, imported from the U.S.A with her to the shop. It was one of those rare coloured Pekineses.  It was very possessive and should any one approach its owner, it would just bite. Somehow it could sense that I was a veterinarian, remembering his experience of being vaccinated at a younger age of 3 months.   It would give me a respectful six dog-lengths, pupils of its eyes dilated, ears erect and four legs ready to spring if I wanted to challenge it. I would also respect it knowing that this one-owner dog, broad skull and flat faced dog was not afraid to chase after big Alsatians dogs five times its weight. It once sneaked upt to a formidable Rottweiler and bit the big dog.

"Baba had sunk its thief into the chauffeur when it was brought to your veterinary clinic and I had to send the chauffeur to see a doctor." Ms Angellinio said, rather proudly of this unique dog.  Pekinese are bred to be friendly and pampered.   This high testosterone dog was unusual in his courage and loyalty.  I would not be taking any chances whenever I had to examine this one-year old commando dog.

On one bright and sunny November day, it barked loudly at two men in beards and sideburns as they sauntered into the jewellry shop to chat with Ms Angellinio across the glass counter and showcase.  They were interested in some diamond rings.  Its owner had shown a pair of diamond ear rings to the prospective buyers.

Why should this Pekinese behave abnormally? Another two tall men were outside the shop which was located in a quiet corner of the hotel.  They looked in, as if they were waiting for some signals from the two men inside.

The Pekinese dashed forward to bite the ankle of one of the men inside as he was about to take something out of his bag.  A pistol dropped as the man screamed in pain and ran out.  The alarm bell was pressed to warn the police that this was a heist.

All four men sprinted away.  This was the first frightful experience for her as her body shook with uncontrollable fear.  This tremors usually happened after a first traumatic and frightful experience to most people.

It was a small shop with 1 staff and it was fortunate that the gun was not used. Or could not be used yet.  What about the ear rings?

One of a pair shown was missing.  Could it be stolen by one of the men or was it swallowed by the dog? Better to check out with the veterinarian.

"The X-ray showed 2 objects which resemble your lost diamond ear ring.  Do you want me to operate on this Pekinese to remove the diamond ear ring from its stomach?" I asked.

Ms Angellinio did not want her dog to be operated as that would be a major surgery cutting open a hole in the stomach, taking out the diamond ear ring and stitching up the hole.   She did not want her dog to suffer pain. I"n that case we would wait for the foreign bodies to be passed out with the stools and if there was pain and fever or loss of appetite, please inform me," I said.

The Pekinese did not show any sign of illness.  Every day, its Owner would diligently check the smelly stools.  It took several days but Ms Angellinio recovered her precious ring.  As for the Owner, she closed shop. It was just too risky to do business in a quiet hotel in Singapore.  Singapore is known to be a safe city. Why not enjoy the pleasant though hot and humid climate, go diving and live a good life?
