The cat with the dilated pupils


"Pupils dilated. I read that when the pupils are wide open, the cat is dying or has died.  The cat has been down on her side for the last 2 days. Is she dying Doc?" asked Hamidah.  

The cat would just lie on her side and not on her chest.  Looking at the eyes, her pupils were big and dilated pupils as if she was in the final stages of life.

"The vet had prescribed me 2 types of tablets for diarrhoea. One is a 20-cent coin and the cat will not take it.  She did recover after the injection and the stools were normal for a day. I forgot to bring the medication to show you." 

Three days of diarrhoea usually do not cause a cat to be recumbent and lifeless. Unless there were signs of poisoning.

The temperature was normal.  That was a good sign that the cat was not in shock.  

"No vet will prescribe a 20-cent (2-cm diameter) sized tablet," queried Dr Foo.

"Actually, I had to divide it into 4 portions and give them to the cat," Hamidah explained. "The cat just can't walk or sit up," said Hamidah. "Is she going to die soon?  What could cause this?"  
 
    

The cat certainly could not even sit on her chest.  Her two pupils were wide open even though she was placed under a bright sunny afternoon on Hair Raya Puasa. Her bushy tail hair was matted.

"Cats are very clean creatures," said Dr Foo. "You could see that she had been trying to clean the oil or some stains from her right paw and this could be engine oil or something hard to lick off.  In the process of grooming, she would likely have had absorbed some poisonous chemicals." 

"The cat just wanders around the condominium and comes home for dinner."

The cat was given dextrose saline and rested in a cage. If the toxin was not in large amounts,  the dextrose saline would help to flush it out of the blood stream.

After 6 hours, she was able to sit on her chest and started to eat. 

3 days later, her pupils had normal reflexes when exposed to bright sunlight.  The pupils constrict as they do normally under the bright sunlight.  She went home.   

Was the cat under the shadow of death?  Dilated pupils are a serious sign in any animal.  In this case, it might not be a sign of impending death but could be due to the anti-diarrhoea drug given by the first vet. 
 

Greyish stains on front paws which usually are  snow white in colour similar to of the muzzle. Constricted pupils.
