Caesarian
when a puppy has died inside the canal
This was the second time under similar circumstances
that the breeder needed a Caesarian section. The first puppy
had died from natural birth, its head being stuck in the
birth canal. Its backside had come out first and if
there was a delay of even half an hour after the water bag
had burst, the puppy would have died. I did not ask whether
the breeder was present at the crucial time of birth. He did
pull out the dead puppy from the birth canal and then called
me for an emergency Caesarian section.
A cigarette in his mouth as he cleaned his kennels, he was
an energetic young man full of practical marketing ideas for
his business. Chocolate-brown face, more rectangular like a
pedigree Labrador Retriever he bred and loved, he was good
at his canine breeding business learning from the hard
knocks of puppy deaths over the years.
Is there a better way other than deaths? I asked myself.
For example, the Maltese bitch was already 66th day into
pregnancy. The majority of Maltese bitches do give birth
naturally. So, how do you decide when a Caesarian section is
needed?
"I had a bad experience with premature puppies delivered at
Caesarian section," the breeder said.
"Was that experience due to the
puppies at 66th day of pregnancy?" I asked him. At
66th day pregnancy, the Maltese puppies would not be
premature. A planned Caesarian at 63rd day would save
all puppies."
"No," he confessed. This Maltese could have been mated
to a larger male and the second puppy was large. It was
alive and well and should grow up to be a good looking one.
A planned Caesarian at the 60 - 63th day would be best if
the breeder knows how to monitor the rectal temperature of
the bitch. If the rectal temperature is less than 37.5
degrees Celsius and there is a relaxation of the muscles
below the spine but above the back half of the body, birth is imminent. A Caesarian section at
this point gives the breeder healthy and vigorous puppies.
