The adopted Shih Tzu would not eat

Singapore Shih Tzu - tear staining or epiphora "She vomited all the biscuits out and had not been eating her meal the past two days," said the slim Ms Church. "Could it be the sweets in the biscuits causing the vomiting?" The three-year old Shih Tzu was adopted 7 days ago and was vaccinated.  It had been spayed and look rather "fat".

This Shih Tzu loved to eat.  No doubt about it.
Singapore Shih Tzu - tear staining or epiphora Her temperature was normal at 39.2 degree Celcius. I palpated the stomach. There was a large amount of gas in the stomach. The epiphora or overflow of tears due to an obstruction of the tear duct gave rise to an acidic smell of the nasal region.  This was common in many Shih Tzus.

There was a change of ownership. Could she be pining for the previous Owner?  No.  She had eaten well after adoption.

Why won't she eat her dry dog feed and canned food the last two days?

Was she fed up of the commercial food?  "Did you feed chicken wings and bones?" I asked, as gas in the stomach and vomiting could be an indication of obstruction of stomach or the small intestine.

The Shih Tzu had enjoyed her chicken wing and drum stick.  Now, there was gastric inflammation and discomfort caused by small pieces of bones.  These bones would take some time to be passed out.

Another problem was that the dog was now keen on the commercial dry feed as the chicken wing tasted better.    The owner would have to stop feeding of table food and the dog would then eat her dry feed.  It was difficult to adhere to a commercial diet as other family members including the grandmother would like to give table food to the dog.

Singapore Shih Tzu with tear staining or epiphoraEPIPHORA.

Tear staining (wet hairs seen inside the black circle) or epiphora was also present below this 1.5 year old Shih Tzu's eyes but the situation was not as bad as the one in the Shih Tzu above.

The wet hairs below the eyes and above the bridge of the nose ought to be clipped off to prevent infection and eradicate dampness which causes bacteria to flourish.  It looked as if the Shih Tzu had rubbed its eyes too.  Regular grooming is important. As Singapore does not have many blow flies, there is less chance of getting maggots growing inside the damp area although cases had been seen in Pekinese.
