The Siberian Husky passed blood in the urine.

Singapore Siberian Husky with blood in the urine."My dog passes blood in the urine for a few days," said Mr Earle. "Could he be having urinary stones stuck in his os penis, bladder or kidney?"  Dog owners are more sophisticated as Singapore progresses to a modern metropolis.  The "os penis" refers to a bone inside the penis of the dog.

The Siberian Husky looked young although he was eight years old or in human equivalent years, he was fifty-six years old.

"He must be a fierce dog," said Nurse Ann. "His bark must be very loud and your neighbours will complain to the Housing and Development Board (HDB) authorities.   In any case, the HDB does not permit you to keep big dogs or you will get evicted."

Mr Earle said: "There was a complaint of me keeping a big dog. But my dog is a very gentle dog and does not bite anybody.  Siberian huskies are not guard dogs and they howl instead of bark."

At that moment, Nurse Ann's Labrador barked at the Siberian Husky. The latter just raised its head and gave a howl.  The Labrador quickly ran away.

Mr Earle, a big man over fifty years old, lifted the Husky onto the examination table. The middle part of the penile area was painful.  Was there a stone stuck inside the os penis?  The complaint was passing blood in the urine. The dog had no difficulty in passing urine. Still small stones could lodge at the curve near the os penis.

"Did somebody kick your dog?" I asked.

"It is possible," said Mr Earle who recalled somebody who disliked his pet.

"Did it have to walk up and down many flights of stairs every day?" I asked.   Many Singapore owners do walk the dog up and downstairs and over the years, the dog become reluctant to do so, due to spinal or joint pain.

"Yes," said Mr Earle. "I live on the seventh floor and the lift opens at the fifth or eight floor. There are at least sixty steps for him to climb up and down for the past eight years. For the last 7 days, he was reluctant to walk down the steps or climb up. "

"He must have knocked his penile area when walking up or down steps. No more walking up and down stairs for the next three months," I said. "Take the lift."

Singapore Siberian Husky with haematuria. It was easier said than done. The older HDB apartments do not have lifts installed at every level.  The old Siberian Husky weighs at least 50 kg. His cartilage and joints at the knees must have been worn out through the years. He was such a heavy dog to carry. However, Mr Earle, being a big man, would carry the dog up and down stairs.

Time flies. Excessive wear and tear will occur on joints if the dog keeps on climbing several flights of stairs from the seventh level to the first level. As it grows older, it feels the pain but can't talk. Dogs over five years old will feel the pain in its joints and be very reluctant to go down the steps or climb up, as willingly as a younger dog.

I hope Mr Earle would not get a back ache and told him to lift the dog, bending his legs to carry it,  without bending his back.

Note:
HDB apartments built before 1990 do not have lifts stopping at every level. The lifts are usually found at every 3rd level. In November 2001, the Straits Times reported a scheme to install lifts at every level provided at least 75% of the precinct agrees to the installation and to pay a subsidized amount of fee.
