Breeder No. 1. The bitch is
very thin. Very productive. Puppies are smaller than normal and are of
uneven size. I advised that the puppies be given special attention and be
nursed by other bitches as the mother is of poor body condition and may
not produce sufficient milk. She may suffer from if she nurses such a
large number of puppies. However, the puppies should get their
colostrum (antibodies in the mother's milk) for the first day. The
breeder has experience and should know what to do. Will follow up on
this case. Update on April 2, 2004. 4 puppies survived to 6 weeks. A professional canine breeder who used herbal supplements and ginseng to feed the puppies and the mothers believing that the herbs produce bigger puppies.

 Update on April 2, 2004. 4 puppies survived to 6 weeks. Home breeder. Puppies tend to grow well when cared for by home breeder as there are not many of them in the first place. The pick of the litter, likely to enter for the dog show competition, is the 2nd pup from the left. |

Breeder No. 2. Rectal
temperature 37 degrees C and 60th day of pregnancy. The breeder did
not wait till past midnight to rush to the vet for Caesarean as this was
NOT necessary. The rectal temperature had dropped from the normal
38.5 degrees C, indicating that the bitch was about to give birth. Ripe for elective Caesarean. Pups were vigorous and cried immediately even before the amniotic sac was ruptured! No need to advise the breeder. He knows what to do and does provide supplementary goat's powder milk feeding. I expect these Chihuahuas to grow up strong and healthy as the breeder has more than 10 years of breeding Chihuahuas. Update on April 2, 2004. 4 puppies survived to 6 weeks. |

Breeder No. 3. No need to
advise the breeder. He knows what to do. The bitch has more milk than
required. 8-hour-old puppies tend to look chubby from this breeder as he
supplements the feeding with goat's powder milk and make sure the stomachs
are full. These puppies should live past the 14 days and grow up to
be fine Shih Tzu puppies. A professional dog breeder with sufficient experience never let the bitch suffer too long and the puppies die from the stress of labour difficulties. They get the Caesarean deliveries done within 3 hours of labour pains and difficulties and their puppies are usually delivered alive. Now, how they survive past 7 days, depends on the breeder's expertise and management. It was a pleasure to perform Caesarean sections to deliver healthy and live puppies for this top breeder as all his bitches usually were not stressed by delays in seeking veterinary help. Update on April 2, 2004. 1 puppy survived to 6 weeks. 2 died within 7 days and they were good-sized puppies. Reasons were unknown. Herpes virus and fading puppy syndrome might be the cause of the neonatal deaths. There was no treatment for such cases. He was advised not to use a common feeding tube for all puppies to supplement with goat's milk. He did not believe this was necessary. A top breeder with one or more batches of puppies born every week. |

In theory, a separate isolated
nursing area for puppies is advised. In practice, the breeder has no space
or manpower to provide such facilities. All puppies are housed together in
the same area with the adults and other growing puppies. Viruses
spread to the newborn. Inevitably, certain batches of less than 7 day olds would die. The mass deaths occur in waves. The fading puppy syndrome has no treatment. The successful breeder accepts such losses stoically. |
