COMMUNITY EDUCATION OF DOG OWNERS SPONSORED BY WWW.ASIAHOMES.COM

Caesarean Shih Tzu. 1 water bag had ruptured. 1 present. asiahomes.comCaesarean interruptus - The lady friend interrupted the Caesarean delivery.

Whimsically, she put her index finger of her left hand into the vagina of the female dog, groped towards the cervix, pouted her deep red downturn lips, stood on her heels and looked at me: "There is no need for a Caesarean section, saving on veterinary costs . I can extract the puppy."

I did not know what to say. Should I remove the gas mask and let her carry on?  Cost savings are a powerful reason for all professional canine breeders and if the bitch could deliver naturally, she should be permitted to do so.  I looked at the breeder who had brought this lady friend to the Surgery and his female dog for an emergency Caesarean.  His bitch had ruptured a water bag earlier, probably 2 hours ago and now there was another water bag dangling from the vagina.  This meant that two puppies were jammed at the birth canal.

His eyes narrowed and focused on one hind leg now extracted by his lady friend.  All breeders want natural deliveries. Would this small Shih Tzu mother be able to do it?  I asked the friend whether she had experience in the delivery of dystocias (difficult birth) as this was not a simple problem and I knew she had never worked in a canine breeding environment.  If this was a simple case, the experienced breeder who had bred a few hundred puppies would have done it.

"I have bred dogs before. Your operating table is too high for me to work properly." She groped in the birth canal trying to hook out the other hind leg.  So, should I stop the anaesthesia and let the mother dog contract and push out the puppy?  This was an unexpected interruption and so I was thinking of how to cope with the Caesarean interruptus if there is such a medical term similar to coitus interruptus.

"I will lower the operating table," I said as I stepped on the foot lever to activate the hydraulic mechanism.  The table sank to her shoulder level and I locked the mechanism.

2 minutes passed.  She put two fingers into the vagina. There was only one puppy's hind leg to show and it was starting to swell.  I kept quiet as there was a conflict of interest.  If I argue for Caesarean, I must be money-faced.

How about the interest of this Shih Shu mother?  She was short in body length and the fact that two water bags had been seen meant that two puppies were stuck in the birth canal.  She needed the emergency Caesarean section.  Time was of the essence.  Yet, I could appear mercenary if I explained further.  The lady friend might not be happy.

The lady friend put her green-stained fingers trying to feel for the hind leg in a small space of the vagina. The mother dog strained as I removed the anaesthetic to let her have labour contractions.

The breeder creased his sun-tanned fore-head and narrowed his eyes: "Proceed with the Caesarean now!"  The anaesthetic effect had dissipated.  The bitch was strong and would not be anaesthesized within a few seconds, like the drop of a hat.  It took another five minutes.

The first puppy taken out from the uterine body was very good looking. It was limp and the tongue was pale.  This was the one jammed in the birth canal and had been cut off from the green placenta which had "melted".  Could the lady friend revive it?  The breeder, for some unknown reason had given it to her to handle it as he handled the other puppies.

"One puppy is dead," he lamented as he took the third puppy from the operating room to do his work. "PUt a drop of the respiratory stimulant on its tongue," I said.  He had shook the puppy head down to fling out the mucus from its lungs, rubbed its neck but there was no life. Its lungs were full of fluid. Perhaps, the delay in Caesarean delivery permitted it to breathe in excessive fluid.

The one with the green legs was the one handled by the lady friend earlier. It was alive after resuscitation by the breeder.  The third and fourth puppies cried immediately on taking out of the womb. No problem with them.  They were connected to the fresh big placentas and were ready to take on the world's challenges.  However, the fourth puppy was hidden deep in the right uterine horn and it took some time to massage it out to the incision  of the uterine body to deliver it.

No blame was apportioned. He must have gone for dinner and that was when the mother dog had difficulty in giving birth.  He had 3 active and vigorous puppies out of four. He had more work to do to make sure they survive the crucial first 7 days.  Losses are part and parcel of the professional canine breeder's life.
