HOW TO CONTROL SEIZURES IN A PUPPY?

Best to consult your vet promptly if the seizures persist for more than 60 seconds.

The 3-month-old mini-maltese spitted out saliva and three grey lumps  of around 2 cm in diameter, covered with thick gelatinous mucus onto the examination table. It opened its eyes wide, clamped its upper and lower jaws and shook its body uncontrollably.  More saliva spotted the table.

"What is wrong?" the young man asked as he held the trembling body.  "Is it going to die?"

"It is showing fits," I said as I inserted the thermometer into its rectum to check its rectal temperature. The temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius was normal.

"What could be the cause?" the young man asked. "If it is hereditary, I can claim the money back from the pet shop within a month, subject to veterinary certification."

"It is hard to tell you the cause of seizures as there are many," I said. "Has the puppy been eating newspapers?"

"It loved newspapers," the young owner said. "It swallowed newspapers when confined in its playpen for the day time."

So, could it be the toxic print that affected the puppy's brain and cause convulsions?  This was an uncommon case and the only evidence was the grey lumps.

The puppy body still trembled.  "This anti-fit injection will stop the fits," I said. "The puppy will then sleep for a while."

I injected the backside muscle and gave it a dextrose injection as well. The puppy stopped trembling in less than ten seconds.

"You said the puppy would be sleeping?" the owner asked. It was jumping up and down the cage wanting to play with the owner. A hyperactive puppy.

It then went moon-walking like Michael Jackson. If you don't know about that, imagine a soldier under a barb wire fence, with his body, hands and legs flat on the ground crawling and advancing towards the enemy.

This puppy crouched low. Then it moved its four legs down and slid along the four sides of the cage. One round and then another two.

An unusual motion which nobody would see a puppy doing. it was due to the effect of the drug.

"This puppy is too strong," I replied. It was quite plump.  Its tummy was full and it had no waist nor could I see its ribs.

I placed the puppy in the cage to rest for 24 hours. Newspapers lining the cage floor had to be removed.

The puppy appeared normal for the next 24 hours. Hungry and thirsty after the seizures.  As to the cause of this seizure, it could be the newspaper ink.

Puppies confined for long hours seldom have much to entertain themselves and chewing newspapers, used for toilet training, is a common complaint. A chewing toy may be neglected.
