Relationships: Father-son
Early to Bed?

"Go downstairs to sleep.." grumbled Mum as she was asked to switch off her favourite cable TV show and to switch off the main lights so that the 2 sons can sleep.

It has always been an irritating issue for her.  "Lights off" at 9pm would be called by Daddy.  The boys could sleep in their room but the elder one had a recent attack of asthma.  He just came up to Mum to ask for the inhaler.  He just does not realise the seriousness of asthma which can lead to death when he can't breathe.

Do Singapore children sleep at 9 pm?  Previously, the boys slept pas 10 pm, after watching the TV "The Golden Pillow" which was a soap opera popular with locals.

Many years, the teacher had complained of inattentiveness in class.  What was the solution?  You could scold and shout at your children for that, but the problem persisted.

After so many years, Dad thought it could be due to lack of sleep.  The children would feel tired at 10am in the class room and then try to keep awake by doing other things.

What is the solution?  Go to bed early.  It seems that the hypothesis of late night and insufficent sleep leading to inattentivenes in class works.  There is no more complaint.

The boys are 11 and 13 years old.  They sleep at 9 pm but can wake up at 7am on weekends, totalling 10 hours of sleep.   During school days, they have difficulty getting up at 6am.

Children dozing in school buses in the morning are a common sight. Probably they have late nights.  School buses come to pick them up at 5 - 6am and they have to get up earlier.

As for Mum, she has to understand the hectic pace in school, the heavy workload and extra curricular activities (ECA) which make sure that the student has no time of his own.    The National Police Cadet Corps seem to be the worst of the lot of ECA.   3 times per week, drilling under the blazing hot sun leading to cracked lips and mouth ulcers and a chocolate brown burnt skin.  All these lead to weariness in the 13-year old and precipitate asthmatic attacks.

Therefore more rest is important. Much more important than TV. Mum can always video-tape the favorite programs and watch during the time the bossy father is off.  As a house-wife, this is one perk.  The pesky father dreams that one day the boys will be grown up and he does not have to be the bad guy to enforce early to bed, early to rise, hoping to make the boys healthy, wealthy and wise.
